How much does it cost to completely remodel a kitchen?
Updated: Dec 1, 2019
Great Question. You must first take a step back and ask yourself what do you want this thing to look like? Do you want a simple make over with your basic cabinets, counter tops and appliance or something on the high end? Custom cabinets, hardwood floors, granite countertops all play a key role in price. In New Jersey a full kitchen remodel can cost you anywhere between $6,000 to $30,000 plus.
Since the kitchen is the focal point of the home it will pay itself off in the long run. This is where we eat, host parties, people spend a lot of time in this one area. It brings people together so by investing more and going with better appliance, more countertop space, more space to cook it will only raise the resell value on your home.
Estimates start out at $75 to $250 per square foot. Ask your self these questions.
- What do you expect from this pace?
- Who will be spending most of there time in here?
- Do you entertain?
- How big of a family do you have?
- How important is the overall countertop space?
- Do you have children?
How do you want it to look and function?
Is the size and configuration of your existing kitchen right for you?
As a rule of thumb industry says spend 5% to 15 % of your homes value on this project. So roughly if your house is worth $350K say 10% renovation cost that would be about $35K for this project without affecting the resale value.
If you want to save money consider some of these alternative options.
- Reface or refinish the cabinets instead of replacing them. Repaint or stain the exterior.
- Replace the door and knobs, have any imperfections and blemishes removed and give it a fresh coast of paint.
Do the remodel in stages. Everything does not have to happen all at once. Do a little at a time until the project is complete.
Cost to renovate a kitchen by size:
Size (Square Feet) Average Cost
Small (<65) $5,500-$25,000
Medium (100-155) $15,000-$45,000
Large (200+) $35,000-$60,000+
Things to consider.
How long do you plan on staying in this home? If you plan to sell in a short period of time its not recommended in spending top dollar on the other hand design something that holds value for your next potential buyer.
If you plan on staying in your home for sometime you may want to spend the extra money installing something that will last over the next 10 plus years.
Last but not least.
Go into this with a plane and don’t leave it to chance. Known your budget. Have money set aside for any unforeseen expenses. Remember your contractor cannot see through walls. Once the walls are opened plumbing, electrical and structural repairs may be needed before the renovation can proceed.
Look online look at designs, meet with a contractor before hand or a kitchen designer to plan the kitchen of your dreams.
Always use a licensed contractor that carries full insurance including all the subcontractors that handle this project. Remember price is important but quality is everything. Always check around for reference and pictures of past work before hiring someone. This is not a small amount of money were talking about so make sure you get what your paying for.
Very important !!!!
Always take out permits. Remember on a full kitchen remodel your going to have plumbers, electricians and carpenters on site just to name a few. Get that extra piece of mind knowing that the job is done right and inspected by a local building inspector. Never cut corners to save an extra buck. If a contractor tries to steer you in a different direction they are not the ones for you.
